ESB Liffey Valley & Pollaphoca Power Station LV Upgrades

Liffey Valley & Pollaphoca are two hydro power stations operated by the ESB on the River Liffey. Motrol were involved in the upgrade of the LV distribution system on both of these sites. The LV distribution system was designed to allow the LV power to be sourced from either turbine on site to ensure no interruption to LV supply.

The upgrade of the LV distribution system involved, the design and manufacture of form 4 AC service panels for both sites. Motrol also programmed and commissioned automation system for the monitoring and control of the service panels.

The project also involved the installation works which included the removal of the existing switchgear and installation of the new and upgrading of supplies from lead lined cables to XLPE. All works had to be carried out under an agreed shutdown programme.

The panel contained the following equipment for the control of the site:

  • Mains synchronisation for changeover of supplies
  • Motor operators on all feeders and incomers to allow for remote operation
  • Power monitoring on all feeders and incomers
  • Arc detection system linked to the tripping of the breakers on detection
  • Control and automation with Siemens S7-200 PLC hardware
