Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage

The Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Scheme was a €135 million investment, in a new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant at Shanbally, 14 new pumping stations, 30km of new sewers, repair work on existing sewers and a drilled crossing under the estuary.

Motrol's involvement in this project was to manufacture the MCC’s for the main plant at Shanbally and the remote pumping stations.

When design began for the main MCC there was two options being explored. Mulitple local process control panels around the site all linked on a main PLC network or one single main MCC.The client decided to opt for the single control MCC.This allowed Motrol to design and build the largest form 4 panel we have ever manufactured at just over 22m long.

This panel contained the following equipment for the control of this site:

  • Form 4 type 3 welded steel enclosure with ASTA certified busbar system
  • Dimensions 22m long by 2.1m tall
  • 1200A Mains Generator Automatic change over
  • 10no. feeder sections
  • 68 No. hardwired DOL & Star delta starters.
  • 30 No. VSD Hardwired starters. VSD’s mounted external to MCC
  • Control & automation section with PLC

As part of the main project Motrol also manufactured 3 no. remote pumping station panels for Monkstown, Church Road and Shanbally.
